We both like to travel so when we knew each other for 2 years we made in 1989 this 2 months journey to the Middle East: Maleisia. We were landing at Kuala-Lumpur, that was the only town we planned to go to. I promisse you.... when travelling together like we did you do for sure start to knowing each other better! We had to trust on each other comepletely , because Malasian people don't speak a word english. Therefore we had to stick closelyand stay together. We were having only a 7 kilogram shoulder-backpack with us and of course " The lonely planet- travel survival kit" ( a travel-guide) . We travelled by public transport as : buses, taxi's and riksja's, or by walking, we needed the travel-guide all the way! I also saw for the first time in my life trees with pink flowers on the beach! But also BIG rats (arrrrrr) and other small animals (torren and hagedissen) everywhere in the streets and in our rooms/lots/cabinas where we were sleeping in... Once we walked on a 'walking- path' -unexperienced as we were, we thought this was a park-....., Well it wasn't, 6 hours later we found our way out,
we were walking in a jungle area with snakes and black panters, imagine ........we were so glad to find our way out, Bert lost his shoe-sole and when he walked later on a normal street, he made this sound: boem, click, boem - boem, click, boem. My open leather shoes were 2 sizes bigger because we had to walk true water and rivers and the water damaged my shoes. Some times it was raining hard or: "cats and dogs", because it was mounson-time (rainy season) , so we had to buy an embrella too. In this journey we also went by boat to the north of Indonesia
/Sumatra, a 12 hour beautiful trip. Why? We saw this boat and though ; "well lets take that boat" not knowing that we passed the border ( the douane was on board to check your passport) and yes, we went to another countrie we found out. Bert was at that time very sick , he was having a high fever, we found out he was having a longue-flue ( from all the changing of temperature by air condition) . 2 weeks later we travelled from Indonesia to Thailand , where medicine are very easy to get. In a small hospital in Hat Yai Bert got 3 fluently coloured "blue-pink-yellow" pills w ich made him better immidiatly and for the rest of our exiting journey. 2 months later we came home in Amsterdam. We both lost a lot of weight, but safely with a lot of more & rich experience. After this trip we knew ( and we still do now) for sure we could count on each other in every circumstances.
