Storm & Dutch DELTA-waterworks

STORM & The Dutch Deltaworks
You have to know that Holland is laying under sealevel...
***
This weekend we expect a hugh storm, Today was on the news that the seawater raised already up onto 3.16 meters above NAP,(NAP= the Normal Amsterdam waterpile) The country Holland is laying far UNDER sealevel. In 1953 'when there was the first big disaster, because the water raised above 3.85 meters above NAP. .....BTW: the ground-water-pile is not everywhere the same and can vary on each spot, coast or island in Holland! Elsewhere in the world they have their own "NAP".
*

The DUTCH "Deltaworks"
In 1953 the southwest of Holland, was hit by a Hugh waterdisaster. It started in 1953 with a 'normal storm' but it soon became an orcane. Metershigh waves went OVER the Dutch dikes , more than 1800 people died, animals too. Many people lost everything, their belongings. This should NEVER happen again ,we thought! And there was a plan "THE DELTAPLAN"
*

(above: small try-out platform)
1961-1962 Waterworks,
Building the "Deltaworks" was a gigantic project, The damms and 'waterreturners' were/are big waterworks, thoug the sea-arms were closed by two technics: Craissons, this are BIG stone(beton) 'walls' , and 2: closing down by big pieces of stone, by cables. Of course secure measurements were needed for the exact places and materials... The technicans needed to have much knowledge of :the power of the seafloat, the power of the streaming, the depth, and where the sandplates (under water) were, the width of the sea-arms and much more....
*
1961-1962Waterbouwkunde
*
Above: a Stormreturner Hollandsche IJssel,
The seadikes near the "waddensea" are 7.5 meters above NAP , although the North-sea-dikes are plm 12 meter above NAP ....
*
Boven: Stormvloedkering Hollandse IJssel:
*
Also the 'Delta-rule/lore's",
discibed the absolute need for the precise hight of DIKES at the biggest rivers as: the RIJN, the MAAS and the IJSSEL. (to protect the people and their houses)
*
*
Above:The 'Afsluitdijk',
Is (A LONG road over sea-water, between the Waddensea and the IJselmeer) connecting The North of Holland to The south of Holland, This dike is 10 Meters above NAP
*

There is story about a little Dutch boy who saved his town from the sea by putting his finger into a leakage in a dyke. Read it as a child and it was so courageous.

Hi everyone, the storm did not harm any places ,cities yet, so we are stil safe haha:)!

Hi Amrita,
Very clever of you to name that story, A wellknown story all over the World.
The Name of that "little boy is HANS BRINKER" so now you know that name with the story too.

Have agreat weekend :)

Thanks for your interest in this blog:)

thank goodness it was not worse than it was!!! But I hear there is a wild spirited Dutch guy who is predicting bad storms again for the end of the month...do you know of this???

THanks Joann for the historical facts and photos, I enjoyed a lot reading at them, I'm not so good yet at Dutch history. I hope you are having a wonderful time in Paris (despite the expected strikes...)

Hi JoAnn.
Groetjes, Gerard

Such huge construction works always fascinates me. It's amazing what can be done with time, money, and lots of hands.

Sounds similar to the levies in New Orleans and we all know how that worked.

Hi ,

-Thanks Gerard ( you deleted your 2 comments) by telling me that the facts were right about the "normal Amsterdam Pile" name, hahah!

*Yes Rebecca we hearded the same story of 'that guy' over here, but it did NOT happen yet! let's hope it will not happen in the future:)
*Lezard You're welcome:)
*Jam we Dutch are still good in Wtareworks, Its also interstingme and I am living here, can you magine?
*Neva Not so well I ques???

Thanks for reacting :)

Glad you had a good time in Paris - never been there and never really wanted to - but this road across the Zuider Zee is one place I've always longed to visit although it is unlikely now I ever will. It is great to see it through your eyes though and I can imagine what it is like.
